St John’s Church

St John’s Church in Kolkata was constructed by the East India Company and was the first Anglican cathedral in India. It remained a cathedral until the consecration of St Paul’s Cathedral in 1847. Because of its history, St John’s Church is an important site for educational excursions in Kolkata, as well as being a popular spot for tourists.

Governor Warren Hastings and Reverend William Johnson were the forces behind the construction of the church, which was built on the site of an old burial ground. Of the old graves there, only two were left undisturbed; the others were dug up and taken away.

The church itself is a rich tapestry of the past, both inside and out. It was built in the neoclassical architectural style and features a towering stone spire with a gigantic clock. Inside, the floor is a blue-grey marble, with huge stain-glass windows allowing the sunlight to filter in. The interior also features historic monuments that point to the history of Kolkata.
