The tour was wonderful, a highlight of our trip for all six of us. The vehicle was clean and comfortable. The guide was well-spoken, friendly, and enthusiastic, as well as full of information at each stop -- she was a terrific guide and we felt comfortable with her driving as well! We thought the tour length was good, not too long or short, and the selection of points of interest to stop at were great. We specially enjoyed Point du Hoc and the American Cemetery.
The museum itself is also excellent -- if you have any interest in D-day or WWII, this is the best place to get a broad perspective coupled with terrific details of life and trials of the time. Although there are many military artifacts, the emphasis is less on equipment and more on the lives of those impacted by the war and how they coped with it.
The price was reasonable, and when we needed to amend our order to add an additional person, it was smoothly handled.
Overall we were very pleased.
However, we would make two comments for improvement. First, the air conditioner in the van was so loud, that those in the back seat could not hear the guide. It was a hot day, so we kept the air on, and rotated seating among ourselves.
Second, we specifically requested and were booked for a morning tour. We took special pains to drive to Caen early, to be certain we were there not later than 8:45 AM, arriving at 8:15. When we arrived we found the doors don't open until 9 AM, and when admitted, we were told by museum staff that morning tours were not offered at all this year, but they had booked us for the afternoon. Viator should have known the morning tours no longer exist, and advised us in advance, since we booked months ahead of time. This was an annoying discovery, because the 5-hour afternoon tour starts at 1 PM -- if we had a train to catch or other obligation in the afternoon before 6 PM or so, we would not have been able to take the tour at all -- not a good situation. This was our first Viator tour, so we will be wary of future bookings.
This tour was exceptional and our guide Mario made it more so with his knowledge of the area and historical facts
Fantastic tour!! Axel was a phenomenal tour guide, providing a wonderful historical lesson about DDay history, battles and beaches. Kept me and my 11 year old captivated. Comfortable van, small group of six, perfect!!
GREAT DAY! Plenty of time to explore the Museum on your own. Our guide to the landing beaches was well-spoken and shared a lot of knowledge and history. I had visited the site previously several times but still learned things I had never heard before. I particularly enjoyed a bit of time to actually walk on Omaha Beach--very humbling experience.
Great tour! We went to the key WWII sites in a comfortable van. Our guide was very informative with maps and photos to better explain everything. We toured through the museum on our own the day before our guided tour. We learned a lot about the events leading up to D-Day as well as what occurred on D-Day and the days following. We had some free time at every stop as well, to explore a bit on our own.
This tour was just ok, nothing more. It is cheap which is about the only thing I can recommend. The entire time we were rushed by both the tour guide and the bus driver who was quite rude. They were in a hurry to finish and not at all interested in us enjoying our visit. We would stop and after the explanation of the site they would say you have 25 minutes to walk around then after 15 minutes they would start shouting yes, shouting for us to return. The tour was mixed language even though it was supposed to be in English which meant that we we spent 1/2 our time waiting for the French explanation before the English. The tour guide knew his facts but they were limited - you get approx 15 minutes at each of the stops which is not much. I would not do this trip again nor would I recommend it. Find a local guide easy to google and book a private tour that will take the time necessary to really get into the locations. This tour was a mill. . Run people thru as fast as you can. Unfortunate but that was our experience. . So much so that we actually arrived back early by 35 minutes to the start. . The driver and guide wanted to finish fast.
The 5 hour guided tour followed by the Memorial de Caen Museum was SUPERB. Our tour guide, LAURA BARBOSA, provided excellent narrative on the setting and events of the D-Day invasion -- would highly recommend her for well-paced, comprehensive, and pleasant presentation skills, fluent in both French and English. Starting with the explanation of the Normandy environment and what led to the timing of D-Day in the comfortable van driven by a wonderful driver, the guided tour stops at all significant stops with in-depth description that was packed with insights. For my husband, a US History teacher of 25 years, this was a WOW experience to illuminate and expand on WW II history. Laura was responsive to any questions posed by the tour group and clearly committed to assuring that each member was satisfied in their learning. One might drive through the Normandy D-Day sites on a self guided tour but could not be able to capture all the important take-aways as provided by a skilled tour guide with stops including Omaha Beach and the American Cemetery. So glad we participated in the tour -- THANKS for the terrific experience.
Al in this tour was simply PERFECT
El tour no es español,solo lo hacen en francés y en inglés jo aconsejo reservarlo directamente en el memorial es más barato y es literalmente el mismo.
Our tour guide was a walking encyclopedia! It was a very pleasant experience and we learned a lot. The museum is huge and it is actually better to skip the audio tour because it doesn't match up too wel to the museum...easier just to look and read.
